My Enemy’s Enemy Ain’t My Friend: Why Y’all Need to Stop Sipping Comey’s Tea

More than 54 years ago, Dr. King received an “anonymous” letter. The letter ended with an ambiguous prompt to kill himself. Within its paragraphs, though, King was repeatedly referred to as “evil,” lambasted for his now well-documented extramarital affairs which the letter’s author referred to as “immoral conduct lower than that of a beast.” King was directed to lend his “sexually psychotic ear to the enclosure,” which was a recording of King involved in sex. That recording was obtained through wire planted in King’s hotel room, part of the infamous surveillance of the famed civil rights leader at the hands of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The FBI’s then director, J. Edgar Hoover, had authored the letter.

Five years after King received that letter, a 21-year-old activist, was murdered while he slept in a Chicago apartment. Reports indicated that nearly 100 shots were fired by Chicago police as the Black Panthers’ Fred Hammond slept heavily, having been slipped a barbiturate from another member of the BPP who had become an FBI informant under COINTELPRO. King’s agitator, J. Edgar Hoover, still held the reigns of the Federal Bureau of Investigation when the horrific assassination was executed.

J. Edgar Hoover died on May 2. 1972, ending his 45-year tenure as head of the most powerful domestic law enforcement agency. Old habits die hard, though, and Hoover’s imprint on the FBI, his legacy of pursing, infiltrating, demolishing and terrorizing Americans who dare fall out of line with the American policy of imperialist, capitalist, racist exploitation and domination, is cemented with blood and bullets. The FBI continues to terrorize Black and brown people, and eliminate — YES, ELIMINATE — anyone they deem a threat to that power. They are the pinnacle of American law enforcement.

And in the tradition of Hoover’s legacy, just last year, it was revealed that the FBI had been surveilling members of Black Lives Matter, the same as they had surveilled King and all other prominent members of the civil rights movement decades before. It’s there thing. It’s what they do. And any person leading that agency will surely not betray its legacy. They will fall in line. They will trample rights and do whatever they must to ensure that America’s supremacy is secured.

So while James Comey has now become the enemy of Trump, testifying before the Senate Intelligence Committee regarding Trump’s obstruction of his investigations into Trump’s ties with Russia earlier today, I need Black people not to join in the tea party because for nearly four years, James Comey did what Hoover did: directed his agents to use their power to ensure that the U.S. system continued to function unchecked and unthreatened. Trump wasn’t in office when his agency was tapping the phones of Black activists.

Comey publicly declaring the corruption we all know was happening is no victory for us. Beyond the fact that the Republican Party, which has stuck with Trump like a cum rag despite his ineptness, will likely never initiate impeachment, whether Trump is President or not, we will continue to be the main course at the American feast of imperialism. We ain’t got no dog in this fight.

And even in the unlikely event that Trump is impeached, he is a rich, white man. He will be insulated from the consequences of his actions by money, race, and ties to the oligarchy. So what the fuck are we celebrating?

How satisfying can tea we’ve been sipping for centuries be? Comey is no friend of ours. This ain’t about us. We’re standing out front watching the parade while the burglars carry our shit out the back door just like when our parents and their parents watched the probe into Nixon’s corruption. Does it matter if we die in a fire or freeze to death if the end result is still death?

Now I’m not saying we shouldn’t be aware. A Black person can never be too educated on this system. And I certainly don’t mean that we shouldn’t savor the overseer turning on the master, but we damned sure need to remember that our enemy’s enemy is not our friend. Comey may want to screw Trump, but trust me, he’s had us bent over for the last four years and his predecessors for decades before.

And I don’t know about y’all, but I ain’t breathing a sigh of relief because he rolled stepped out to get some new ass for a minute.
