JT’s problem is that he’ s fake woke. He’s got the moves down –but can’t get “the Movement” part in sync. He can perform Blackness, but never be it. And he cannot stand when people tell him he can’t have something he wants.
Certainly there is room for the stories of Dreamers – but the stories of Sons and Daughters of Bondage will not be cast off the shelf to make room for them. The stories of Dreamers will not overwrite the stories of those who inspired the dream and built the foundations and mooring upon which those dreams stand. Shit like this is why anyone playing the victim rankles us so. Because we are used to people with privilege, and power doing dirt and crying foul. And we can argue about whether we see shades and shadows of this behavior among our own, but no one on the planet plays victim better than white people. Because white people know they are protected by a system that prioritizes white feelings over Black suffering.
X was an ENTIRELY BLACK phenomenon that white people couldn’t ignore, or participate in. They could see the film, but they couldn’t have it. It would not apologize to them. It would not coddle them. It would not placate them with a major role.
